Constitution

1.  The name of the society is

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Western Canada) Association

2.  The Purposes of the society are
  1. To support the goals and activities of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University including both the former Hong Kong Polytechnic and Hong Kong Technical College (hereinafter referred to as the "PolyU").
  2. To develop and maintain close relationship and contact between the Society and the PolyU.
  3. To promote better communication, interaction, and academic exchange between the Canadian community and the PolyU.
  4. To enhance the friendship, communication and fellowship among the Society members.
  5. To promote better integration of the Society members and other immigrants to Canada into the Canadian community.
  6. To promote and cater the welfare and common interests of the Society members and the community at large.
  7. To set up and run forums on career choices and career options for the Society members and the community at large.
  8. To promote linkage between Canadian educational institutions and the PolyU.
  9. To establish scholarships for Canadian students/scholars to study/conduct research at the PolyU.
  10. To establish scholarships for the PolyU students/scholars to student/conduct research at Canadian institutions.
  11. To promote and hold either alone or in conjunction with any other corporation or association, club or person any competition, meeting, conference, visit, seminar, lecture, exhibition or performance of any kind with a view to furthering the Society’s objects and the raising of money for the purposes of the Society and to offer, give, contribute to and distribute prizes, awards and bonuses in connection therewith and to promote, give, hold or support dinners, balls, meetings, concerts and other functions for the purposes aforesaid.
3.  The activities and purposes of the Society shall be carried on without purpose of gain for its members and any income, profits or other accretions to the Society shall be used in promoting the purposes of the Society.

4.  In the event of the winding-up or dissolution of the Society, all the funds and assets of the Society remaining after the payment or satisfaction of all costs, charges, expenses, debts and liabilities of the Society, including the remuneration (if any) of a liquidator, and after payment to employees of the Society of any arrears of salaries or wages, and after the payment of any debts of the Society, shall be given, transferred and distributed to such organizations that are registered charities pursuant to the provisions of the Income Tax Act that shall be designated by the members of the Society at the time of the winding-up or dissolution of the Society and if effect cannot be given to the aforesaid provisions, such funds shall be given, transferred and distributed to such organizations that are determined by the members of the Society to be registered charities pursuant to the provisions of the Income Tax Act which have purposes similar to those of the Society.

5.    

  1. The Society shall not support with its funds, or impose on, or procure to be observed by its members or others, any regulation or restriction which, if an object of the Society would make it a trade union;
  2. The PolyU shall have no responsibility whatsoever for the acts of the Society and the Society is not and shall not at any time claim of purport to be connected with or represent the PolyU in any way, nor shall the Society invoke the name of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (otherwise than having the word "The Hong Kong Polytechnic University" form part of the full name of the Society) in any way in carrying out its objects or any of them.
6.  Paragraph 3, 4, and 5 of the Constitution are unalterable in accordance with section 22 of the Society Act.
